TYPOGRAPHY PROJECT 2, PSYCHOLOGY AND THEORIES | RESEARCH

This week we started another Typography project. This time the brief is asking us to research about a theory of our choice and to then produce a book. After a session spent brainstorming and researching I decided to further analyse the theory of Economic Materialism.
Definition:

I chose this theory because it is related to cultural, artistic and economical movements such as consumerism and Pop Art which both highly interest me. Advertising as well takes a big part in this theory as it is one of the causes of being obsessed with accumulating material wealth in my understanding. Before starting to research, I asked myself a question: Do I believe in Materialism? Honestly I could reply yes, I do and no, I do not. I jotted down some points about why I do or do not believe in this theory in my sketchbook (image 1).

Research:

I started researching on Graphic Designers and the use of typography in their work. Like in other projects I really liked and took inspiration from David Carson's work. Hid design is clean, legible and the balance between blank space and type or visual is really well thought. Some examples of his work are shown on the right page of my sketchbook in the image below.

Secondary research on practitioners. On the left: Wim Crouwel. On the right: David Carson. Author's own.
I made some annotations in my sketchbook about how a certain work could potentially help me or not and I will show it when I will take and develop a visual direction for the final book.

Final outcome:
